The Backstory

I graduated from my master’s program in 2016, but due to administrative issues, I couldn’t attend the ceremony or collect my diploma that year. I didn’t even have pictures taken to commemorate the moment—a gap I’ve since worked to address for others.

During the final year of our undergraduate experience, many seniors at Trinity College were juggling classes, work, and milestone events like last-chance dances and ring ceremonies. Yearbook portraits, a longstanding tradition, had lost their appeal in an increasingly digital era. Official school media and yearbook committees were barely known to the student body, leaving little investment in the process beyond the single, sacred cap-and-gown photo.

What We Did

Seeing an opportunity, I offered portrait sessions to several peers who wanted more personal and dynamic images to commemorate their time. Trinity’s diverse student population carried unique talents and passions that deserved to be captured beyond the traditional look. The portraits featured here reflect the personalities and experiences of my classmates ahead of our graduation, adding a deeper layer to their collegiate memories.

Upbound Moments – TC Class of 2014

Selected images from a series of several portraiture sessions from five of a set of Trinity College students.

MelissaA Swinging Look

In passing, I asked Melissa if she’d like to take some senior portraits beyond the standard cap-and-gown offerings. Like many students, neither of us could afford the premium packages offered by the school, and I had been honing my portraiture skills for over a year. Excited to try my first wireless strobe light, I offered to take supplementary portraits for several classmates. Melissa chose an early 20th-century swing-time style, and we used a billiards table in one of the dorm common areas to craft a vibrant, stylized scene.

Avery A Swinging Look

Avery was one of my first friends at Trinity College; we lived in the same dorms all four years. I remember watching her sing on stage in the school’s production Memory, a nod to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s works. For her portraits, she wore an embroidered stage-inspired piece for her high-key shots but insisted on a naturally lit dramatic close-up. I happily obliged, and the result captured her elegance and poise beautifully.

Sara A Swinging Look

Sara was another one of my “day one” friends from college. Her portraits came about by chance during a casual walk with another mutual friend. She joined in spontaneously, and we used the opportunity to catch some natural light. A set of spray-painted rocks nearby provided a striking contrast to the bold greens of the surrounding trees, adding texture and vibrancy to the images.

Myles A Swinging Look

I met Myles on the very first day I stepped onto campus—he was the first student my mother and I encountered. While I was signed up for a four-and-a-half-day nature retreat for incoming students, Myles was in the earlier group. When he noticed us looking for the right building, he kindly escorted us there, setting the tone for a friendship that lasted all four years. Capturing his portrait felt like preserving a moment from the beginning of a meaningful journey.

Lovelie A Swinging Look

Lovelie and I didn’t share a long history at Trinity, despite the school’s small size. It’s surprising how easily people can miss each other due to differing schedules, study-abroad cycles, or campus routines. Nonetheless, every encounter with her was electric—she had a sharp wit and kept me laughing. We shot four looks, but her corporate-style portraits were some of my favorites, adding much-needed contrast to the earlier segments of my portfolio.
