What is This?

The Vagina Monologues is an episodic play written by Eve Ensler, first performed off-Broadway at the Westside Theatre in 1996. This powerful production weaves together first-person monologues, each recounting deeply personal and diverse feminine experiences. From themes of sexual identity and self-discovery to sensitive issues like assault, puberty, reclamation, and mental health, these stories—rooted in real-life accounts—confront the complexities and nuances of womanhood with unflinching honesty.

THE BREIF

In 2014, the Women & Gender Resource Action Center (WGRAC) at Trinity College sought someone to handle cast portraits and event capture for that year’s performance of The Vagina Monologues. The task required not only technical skill but also a sensitivity to the subject matter. As a senior with an expanding portfolio and new equipment, I took on the project, grateful for the opportunity to support a production so profoundly tied to the movement against violence towards women.

WHAT WE DID

Using an adjacent hallway to the performance space as an impromptu portrait studio, I worked with a modest lighting setup and a lot of post-production care. My tools were basic, but the results reflect how thoughtful use of even budget equipment can achieve compelling images. The following evening, I documented the performance itself, allowing the gravity of the monologues and the power of the cast’s delivery to speak for themselves.

Soliloques of the Evening

Here, I share selected images from that project—not just as a portfolio entry but as a moment of contribution to a larger conversation. Through these photographs, I hope to have played a small part in amplifying the voices and stories that challenge the silence surrounding violence and inequities faced by women everywhere.
